Orson Clark-11/23/81 - Pg 11
Orson Clark: But when spring came, it was filled. There wasn't a vacancy so they just simply said, "We can't hire you because there isn't a vacancy.
Interviewer: How much were you paid that year, do you remember?
Orson Clark: I think it was around $1,300. So we moved back to Farmington. I went to the Superintendent here and he gave me encouragement. When it came right down to it, $1,100 is all he would pay. But I said, "Well, I'll take it." That was in Centerville. I took it and taught there. I taught two years there.
Interviewer: What grade were you teaching there?
Orson Clark: It was different classes.
Lucille Clark: It was seventh and eighth grades.
Ruth Knowlton: What subject were you specializing in your classes, or did you still have to teach all the subjects?
Orson Clark: No, I had to teach all of them in Sunnyside but in Montpelier it was history and economics and things of that sort. When I came down to Centerville it was fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade.
Interviewer: Were you living in Farmington at the time?
Orson Clark: Yes. We moved down.
Interviewer: Did you rent a home here in Farmington?
Lucille Clark: We lived in the west part of the Rock House.
Orson Clark: I was there two years in Centerville with these little kids. After being as I had been, I just told the Superintendent, "No more." I knew there was a vacancy coming up in the Junior High at Bountiful. I said, "If you want to let me have that vacancy, I'll take it but I don't want the youngsters anymore," So he said, "Well, I don't know, but we'll have a job for you." I said, "All right then, if you can't let me transfer over there, goodbye." All right then, if you can't let me transfer over there, goodbye." About a week before school started he called up and he said, "You can have that job." So I stayed right there the rest of the time.
Ruth Knowlton: And that was Bountiful Junior?
Orson Clark: Yes. It was known as South Davis Junior High when I taught there but they changed it when they built the one in the south.
