Orson Clark-11/23/81 - Pg 12

Interviewer: Let me ask you this, what qualifications did you need to teach school in those days? Did you have to graduate from a University?

Orson Clark: Oh, yes. There were three or four education subjects you had to take.

Interviewer: You took those at the U?

Orson Clark: Yes.

Interviewer: Were planning to become a school teacher when you were at the U?

Orson Clark: Well, I figured pretty much that's what I would do. Yes I figured that that is what I would get into. But I figured that I wouldn't stay there the rest of my life. I kind of had that in the back of my mind but things just didn't pick up. Finally, I picked up and left.

Interviewer: Now, how long did you teach there?

Orson Clark: Twenty-three years.

Interviewer: Where was this?

Ruth Knowlton: South Davis Junior High.

Interviewer: In Bountiful. You were teaching Junior High School and you taught math, history, and what other subjects did you teach?

Orson Clark: Science.

Interviewer: How long did you teach overall?

Orson Clark: Twenty-three years.

Interviewer: Did your salary go up very much?

Lucille Clark: It got up to $3,000 before he quit.

Orson Clark: No, $1,300.

Lucille Clark: Yes, you were getting around $3,000 when you quit.

Orson Clark: Oh, yes that's right.

Ruth Knowlton: I would think that would be about right because Clark's first professiorial job was an associate professor and they paid him $4,000, for three quarters of course. That was 1952.
