Monday - Oct. 14, 1918 pleasant

After breakfast at Thomas' and getting our things together we hit up for the pali (steep hill), Bro. Jones and I both walking and the rest riding on horses. Bros. Nelson and Jones went from Kukuihaele to Waimea on horses while Bro. Madsen and I took the women folks back to Kalopa in the car and then we went for Waimea. Arrived safely we spent the rest of the day seeing the town and also went over to the branding and breeding pens and around the horse-breaking barns, it being educational to all of us and to Bro. Nelson especially. We stayed all night at Ku Kauwe's and so we spent the evening with them, they treating us fine.

Tuesday - Oct. 15, 1918

On leaving Sister Ku's in the morning we went down town where we met Mr. Carter the manager of the Parker Ranch and he invited us to go to Waikii with him in his car so we took him up on it and was soon speeding toward Mauna Kea. The roads were rough part of the way so we were on the road quite a while before reaching there. Waikii is noted for its corn as the Ranch has 5,000 acres under cultivation there for that purpose and so when we got there it looked like a regular desert of corn to see so much of it growing at once. The best grade of corn grown by them is ground to corn flour by machinery right there while the lesser grade is fed to the pigs of which they must have over a thousand by the looks as they were certainly a sight to look at. We enjoyed ourselves fine and Mr. Carter treated us excellently taking us through corn field after corn field and showing us the different stages in the growing of it from the plowing done by caterpillars to the picking and grinding. I thought that I had seen corn grown before I went up there but I had decided different before getting back, they are certainly doing it on a large scale. Carter treated us fine and after a dinner with him and another ride around in the afternoon he took us back to Waimea having enjoyed ourselves wonderfully.

Arrived at Waima Bro. Jones and Nelson went back up to Ku's to stay all night and Bro. Madsen feeling extra generous with his car we decided to take a run over to Kohala to spend the night with Newman Daines. We had a fairly good ride and arrived at Kohala first, stopping at Paul Elemakule's house with the idea of finding them (the Elders) there but after waking him up out of bed he politely informed us that they were at Nuulii it being the Waipio end of the Conference, so we hit out for the said place and landed at the Meeting House where they were just starting Hui meeting which we of course attended. Pau ka halawai (after the meeting) we walked up a little gulley to a house to stay all night but spent a greater part of it talking over "old times" with Newman and Daines.

Waimea - Kalopa, maikai (beautiful)

We were all up early and talking again before breakfast at which Pikao accompanied us. They gave us a good breakfast after which we (the 4 of us) left and rode together, but parted at a little town close to Kohala and then Madsen and I hit off over the
