Orson Clark - Apr '72 - Pg 9
grades?
Orson Clark: Two grades to a room.
Interviewer: Did this cover grades one and two?
Orson Clark: Well, I think grade one was single and grade two was single but three and four, five and six, and seven and eight were in separate rooms.
Interviewer: So you went to the same school for eight years?
Orson Clark: Yes.
Interviewer: Can you remember any of the basic subjects that they taught you there?
Orson Clark: Oh, arithmetic, spelling, writing, and reading.
Interviewer: Did they have spelling bees or anything like that?
Orson Clark: Yes, they did. When I was in the upper grades, nearly every Friday we had a spelling bee, choosing sides.
Interviewer: What was the school game or what did most of the students enjoy playing during the recess time?
Orson Clark: Baseball.
Interviewer: Did just the boys participate or did the girls also?
Orson Clark: The boys had theirs and the girls did very little baseball playing then.
Interviewer: Is there any particular teacher that you remember?
Orson Clark: Yes, I had Minerva and Louise Clark who were sisters, Annie and Minnie Nelson who were sisters, and George Q. Knowlton for the seventh and eighth grades.
Interviewer: Is there any teacher that motivated you to want to continue your education like you did?
Orson Clark: George Q. Knowlton. He was a wonderful teacher and a wonderful man who always encouraged people to improve themselves.
Interviewer: Is that the biggest thing that made you want to continue on with your education?
Orson Clark: Well, not necessarily. I went on because I knew that to accomplish the goals in life that I wanted to accomplish, I would have to have an education.
