Orson Clark-11/23/81 - Pg 8

Orson Clark: They had a house for us.

Interviewer: Did you like Sunnyside.

Lucille Clark: Oh yes, yes. We found some people that we knew.

Ruth Knowlton: How many children did you have by then?

Lucille Clark: Just one. I had a miscarriage with twin girls while we were on First South.

Orson Clark: Anyway, on the gym, that was exercise for me. It was boxing and wrestling and all. I taught boxing. Of course I was right in the prime of life and strength. I had worked on these jobs and they had physical work. Anyway, there were two or three of those boys who were as large as I was. They framed me one night. They were going to really give it to me. I had taught them how to spar and not try to knock out and things like that. So they got the biggest boy to put on the boxing gloves. They wanted me to put them on with him. "Sure I'll box with you." We got to boxing and he decided he was going to put me out. He come with a hard one and I just caught him right under there and he just dropped to the floor.

Interviewer: I'll bet your reputation went up like that.

Orson Clark: You know, I had had quite a little trouble with some of those kids. When he laid there for a few seconds he said, "I've had enough." You know, I had no more trouble with those kids from then on.

Interviewer: I'll bet you didn't.

Orson Clark: Well, I just caught him at his own game, you see. He thought he was going to knock me out. Instead of that I just got him.

Interviewer: How much did they pay you for that year?

Orson Clark: What was that, $1,100?

Lucille Clark: It was around that. I think you got a little more than you did when you came back. After you had gone up to Montpelier for a year and high school down there, then they hired you for $1,100 a year.

Interviewer: Your first teaching job was in Sunnyside and you were there one year?

Orson Clark: One year. I remember it was around $1,100.

Interviewer: Then where did you go?
