joined the Church, he had considerable property. He bought a fine horse for both Heber C. Kimball and the Prophet Joseph Smith. I have seen a picture of the Prophet on the horse he called "Jo Duncan." Aunt Tilda, Grandfather Duncan's eldest child says she heard her father say it was named for Grandfather and the Prophet. He also have a third horse to Brigham Young. After Grandfather came to Utah and settled on a farm in Bountiful, Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball each gave him a horse in return.
Grandfather Duncan died two years after my birth, so of course I have no remembrance of him. David O. Willey who was born and lived as an adult just across the street from him, gave me an interesting insight into his life. He was a cheerful person, he said, but proud and fearless. For instance it was rumored at one time that the enemies of the Church were after Brigham Young. David Willey said he saw Grandfather grab his gun and start off walking to Salt Lake City, not having any other means of getting there. He was going to defend Brigham Young to the last ditch. He hated injustice in any form whether from State and Government Officials or encroachment of the neighbors, and was quick to manifest it. He kept his farm in good shape and would not drive anything but well-fed, and well-groomed horses.
On his farm was an abundance of cream and milk, fat chickens, special fed pork, fruits, and garden gifts. I have seen Grandmother go out and catch a chicken and have it on cooking for unexpected visitors in an amazingly short time. Her family was well fed three times a day the year round.
