Orson Clark-12/14/81 - Pg 27
about 82 or 83. He died while we were on our way to Florida on a mission. We went and saw him in the hospital before we left. We knew it was just a matter of time.
Interviewer: What was he down with?
Orson Clark: You know what the killer is, cancer. He just wasted away.
Interviewer: What kind of cancer did he have?
Orson Clark: It was interior some way. He was operated on. He had a little trouble in the lower part of his stomach. When they operated they found there was a lump there. Of course the doctors, they don't tell you anything, "Oh, it isn't cancer." They sewed him up and pretty soon there was more of it. "Oh, we've got it all, we've got all." But he just wasted away. Yes sir. Well, I don't know what else I can tell you.
Interviewer: We want to start on your Uncles now, about Uncles Joseph, Uncle Eddie and Uncle Amasa.
Orson Clark: They used to play marbles together. When they would go up to see Wilford and the other members of the family up there, they would take their marbles and go and play marbles.
Interviewer: How old were they?
Ruth Knowlton: As old as they got, they still played?
Orson Clark: Yes, old men.
Ruth Knowlton: What about Uncle Charles, Charlie?
Orson Clark: Well, let's come to him in a minute. Somebody was telling me, right lately I heard them tell that Amasa, Joseph, and Eddie decided to go up to Montpelier. They went in the store and said they wanted to buy some marbles. The storekeeper said, "What do you want marbles for?" He said, "We're going to play marbles, we're going to play with our brother." So they sold them some marbles and they went and Uncle Amasa said, "Eddie could always beat him in marbles but he's going to see if he couldn't beat Eddie now." When they came back he was asked, "How did it come out?" "By jolly, Eddie can still beat me!"
Ruth Knowlton: So Eddie got most of the marbles?
Orson Clark: Yes. I remember how they used to go up there. They would say, "We're going to play marbles," and they would hunt up a few marbles.
Interviewer: They may still be playing marbles.
