you might say. The horse was about the only power that they had in those days. In order to run all this property, it just kept us busy all the time.

G: Would your half brothers come down and help you here on the farm in Farmington?

C: Walter, the oldest son, came down at one time and spent one summer I think here helping on the farm. I remember him being here with us. He was the big brother when he was here. There was no distinction between on family and the other. We were all the same as one family. If one went to the other's place, he was just like one of the children of that family.

G: Give me an example of what you mean.

C: Sometimes when people come into another family or another home, they are a little strange and sometimes treated a little strangely. But when he used to come, he would just get in and he was one of the family. He came and worked right along with the rest and went to the meals the same as all the others. He had his place to sleep just the same as the other children.

G: Would your mother discipline Walter the same as she disciplined you and your brothers and sisters?

C: I don't know. I only remember of one occasion where Mother really disciplined me. That was an occasion when I was playing with the neighbors. Mother called me to come home, and I didn't come. She sent my brother after me. He came over and just picked me up body and sould and carried me home. I kicked around and made a fuss and hollered and bellowed and I swore at him. When he got me home, he told Mother that I had sworn at him. Mother really gave me the going over with a whipping. That is the only time that I know of my mother disciplining me or any member of the family. I think that was the last time I ever swore.

G: Do you have memories of other half brothers and sisters visiting down here at your home?

C: The youngest, Bryant [Bryant Randall Clark], used to come quite often to the place and just visit with us for a little. Bryant was the youngest of Aunt Alice's family. As soon as he graduated from college he went to the colonies in Mexico and had a job teaching school down there. So he stayed there the rest of his life. He still lives there and comes back every little while. When he comes, he always sees that he comes to visit every one of the family that are up here. In fact he was through here less than two weeks ago. We weren't here at the time, but he visited my sister and told her that he was sorry he didn't get to see us but he was on his way. He had to go up and visit some of the others on his short stay here.
