GENERAL PREFACE

The late Clark Shumway Knowlton (1919-1991) served the Ezra T. Clark Family Organization in many outstanding ways, including as its president (1980-1982). This scholar intended to document the life of each of the 21 children and 161 grandchildren of E.T. Clark and his two wives, Mary Stevenson Clark and Susan Leggett Clark. Clark Knowlton interviewed or caused to be interviewed many of the above offspring. At his untimely death there were many tape recordings to be transcribed and edited, and many more people to be interviewed. Most of the children and grandchildren were not thus recorded and the Knowlton project was left to his successors.

The following monograph is an introduction to the life of one descendant of Ezra T. Clark. The biographical sketch by Robert F. Gould (Ezra Thompson Clark: His Ancestors and Descendants, Gould Books, Guilford CT 1995, 2nd printing) in many cases comprises the most that is in print concerning these descendants. The numbers before most of the names are those assigned by author Gould in his book. Many efforts have been expended to obtain more information, and more might yet come forth.

The aim is to have all such monographs completed as far as practical and possible by the year 2000, and available for Ezra T. Clark family readers in the Special Collection of the Marriott Library at the University of Utah and in the Special Collections at the Harold B. Lee Library at the Brigham Young University. A third copy of each volume (book, monograph) shall be part of the forthcoming Farmington Historical Museum.

Hopefully, more information on all of these worthy souls shall soon be a vital part of these three libraries.
