He farmed the Clark family farm and ranch near Georgetown, Idaho. His father requested him to operate that part of the family business. Because of his love for learning and teaching and because of his accomplishments in that area, a story is told that Karl G. Maeser asked him to come to Brigham Young Academy in Provo to be part of the faculty but his father overruled that request so that he could run a part of the family business.
