PREFACE

This is a transcription of an interview conducted for the Oral History Project of the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.

Scholars are welcome to utilize short excerpts from this manuscript without obtaining permission as long as proper credit is given to the interviewee, interviewer, and the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies and other sponsoring institutions, if any. Scholars must, however, obtain permission from the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies before making extensive quotations of the manuscript or of related materials.

The original recording has been treated as only the first stage in the creation of this manuscript. A verbatim transcript of the audio tape was made and then edited to conform to the standards of the written language. Unclarity, to a certain extent, false starts and redundancies were removed. The Center spoken language. The edited copy was returned to the interviewee for his corrections, additions, and deletions, which in some cases might have been extensive. The corrected copy was bound and deposited in the final form as it appears here.

In addition to this transcript, the original tape and the results of the intermediate processing stages are available for scholarly use. The tape of the interview has been preserved and is available; the intermediate processing stages are also available but only upon application to the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies.

Beyond the interviewer's efforts to obtain the truth during the interview, the Charles Redd Center assumes to responsibility for the accuracy of the statements made in this transcript.
